Brick Cleaning Methods for Exeter New Builds
Different brick types require different cleaning approaches — we tailor our method to your build
Exeter's construction boom has brought a wide variety of brick types to new developments across the city, from the housing estates in Pinhoe and Cranbrook to individual builds in the surrounding villages. Each brick type responds differently to cleaning chemicals and pressure, which is why a one-size-fits-all approach risks permanent damage.
Engineering bricks used in foundations and retaining walls are extremely hard and can tolerate stronger acid concentrations and moderate pressure. Stock bricks and handmade bricks, increasingly popular on premium Exeter developments for their traditional appearance, are far more porous and require gentler treatment with diluted solutions and minimal pressure. Wire-cut bricks used in most standard new builds fall somewhere in between.
We always carry out a small test patch on an inconspicuous area before cleaning any new build. This allows us to confirm the correct acid dilution, dwell time, and rinse pressure for your specific bricks. We also check that the mortar has fully cured — a minimum of 7 days, though we prefer 14 days for lime-based mortars — before applying any cleaning solution.
Our cleaning solutions are biodegradable and we take care to protect windows, doors, landscaping, and any completed ground works before we start. All waste water is managed responsibly in line with environmental regulations. After cleaning, we carry out a full walk-around inspection with the site manager or homeowner to confirm the finish meets expectations.
Common Stains We Remove
Mortar Splatter & Smears
The most common issue on new builds. Fresh mortar drops and smears are treated with diluted brick acid that dissolves the cement without attacking the brick face. We work section by section, pre-wetting the brickwork to prevent acid absorption into the brick itself.
Efflorescence (White Salt Deposits)
White crystalline deposits that appear on new brickwork as moisture evaporates through the brick, drawing salts to the surface. Common in Devon's wet climate. We use specialist efflorescence removers that dissolve the salts without staining. In some cases, dry brushing is sufficient for light deposits.
Scaffolding Rust Marks
Metal scaffolding clips and poles leave orange-brown rust stains on brickwork, particularly in Devon's damp conditions. These require specialist rust-removing agents applied carefully to avoid discolouring the surrounding brick. We treat each mark individually for the best result.
Cement Burns
Cement left in contact with bricks for extended periods can chemically bond with the surface, causing discolouration known as cement burn. These are the most stubborn stains to remove and require stronger acid treatment with careful timing to avoid over-etching the brick face.
