Engineering bricks used in foundations and retaining walls are extremely hard and can tolerate stronger acid concentrations and moderate pressure. Stock bricks and handmade bricks, increasingly popular on premium Exeter developments for their traditional appearance, are far more porous and require gentler treatment with diluted solutions and minimal pressure. Wire-cut bricks used in most standard new builds fall somewhere in between.

We always carry out a small test patch on an inconspicuous area before cleaning any new build. This allows us to confirm the correct acid dilution, dwell time, and rinse pressure for your specific bricks. We also check that the mortar has fully cured — a minimum of 7 days, though we prefer 14 days for lime-based mortars — before applying any cleaning solution.
